The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is based on the ancient Vedic tradition of India of which the essential part is feeding people. Srila Prabhupada, the founder of this world-wide institution, officially began the program of charitable food distribution in 1973 when in India he saw village children fighting with street dogs for food scraps. This prompted him to give the order that, "No one within a ten mile radius of an ISKCON center should go hungry."
Over the last 25 years 1,500 volunteers have established vegetarian food relief services in 65 countries throughout the world.
Currently, ISKCON Food for Life is the largest vegetarian food-relief organization in the world, having distributed an estimated 90 million free meals to the needy of the world, both in cities and in disaster areas. Every 30 seconds someone in the world receives a hot vegetarian meal from a volunteer from ISKCON.
Following is the list of food distribution activities presently carried out by the volunteers here at our ISKCON Seattle branch on a regular basis:
1. Distribution of free vegetarian meals every Thursday at the University of Washington campus.
2. Distribution of free vegetarian meals every Sunday at our Sammamish center.
3. Distribution of free vegetarian meals in Downtown Seattle throughout the Labor Day Weekend every year.
